Instructions on how to use the Jordan Charger

POWER: 1 ea. "D" Cell battery
BATTERY LIFE: Capable of recharging dosimeters thousands of times.
SIZE: 4"(10.2 cm)W X 4"(10.2 cm)L X 3"(7.6 cm)H
WEIGHT:
8.6 oz (254 grams)
The dosimeter has a built-in string electrometer and ion chamber.   The Jordan 750.5 Charger is used to impress a charge on this ion chamber.   A zero position on the built-in scale will indicate that the dosimeter is fully charged.  Radiation passing through the chamber will cause the charge to leak off in proportion to the amount of radiation and move the electrometer string upscale accordingly. This upscale position indicates the amount of radiation exposure.

The Jordan 750-5 Charger is a compact lightweight charger designed to charge most direct-reading quartz fiber dosimeters.  This instrument features a fully transistorized and printed circuit board.  Power  required for operation is furnished by a single "D" flashlight type battery, capable of recharging dosimeters thousands of times before replacement is necessary, thus making it an economical and reliable charger to operate.   A safety spring located in the charging socket of the Model 750-D prevents damage to the dosimeter in the event that excessive pressure is exercised when recharging.   Both moisture-proof and dust-proof, the charger also features a protective cap to prevent any moisture or dust from accumulating in the charging socket when not in use.

Operation & Maintenance

Description

The JN-750-5 is a self contained battery operated instrument. This instrument will charge to zero any self-reading dosimeter or Direct Reading Dosimeter (DRD) as sometimes they are referred to.  The JN 750-5 is manufactured to ANSI specs. It has a “charging contact” and a “down-scale / up scale” control for setting the hairline indicator in each meter to zero.  The charger is powered by a single 1.5 V “D-cell” flashlight battery which operates the charging circuit and the light for illuminating the meter scales.  No tools are required to change the battery or the light bulb, and there are no internal adjustments to be made to the charger.

Operating Instructions

To charge (Zero) a Dosimeter

1.       Place dosimeter on charging contact and PRESS DOWN FIRMLY.

2.       Rotate voltage control until hairline image on the dosimeter scale is at zero

3.Remove dosimeter and check reading using charger light (rezero if necessary).

To Read a Dosimeter

Maintenance

A.      To Open Case

Loosen screw on top of cover and remove cover

B      To Replace Bulb

1.       Open case

2.       Remove bulb

3.       Replace with spare bulb ( No. 131 bulb or equivalent)

Note: There is a hole in the circuit board that will allow storage of a spare bulb, a grommet is necessary to accommodate the bulb (grommet and spare bulb not included)

C      To Replace Battery

1.       Open case

2.       Lift out battery

3.       Replace with 1.5 – volt D-cell battery

CAUTION: Orient battery as shown by +  Pos and – labels on the circuit board

A.      Care of Charging Contact

Always keep the protective cap on the charging contact when the charger is not in use.

The clear plastic surfaces of the charging contact should be dry, clean and free of fingerprints.  A soft cloth free of grit, dirt, lint or moisture may be used to clean the plastic surfaces.

CAUTION:  Do not use solvent or cleaning fluid to clean plastic ( solvents can craze plastic

Storage

A.      Remove the battery from charger, if it is to be stored for more than 2 months

B. Store with case closed and protective cap on charging contact

Preventative Maintenance ( once a month)

A.      Clean battery contacts to bright metal with steel wool or equivalent.

B.      Check battery and bulb (replace as required)

C. Check electrical operation

Trouble Shooting

If instrument does not appear to operate normally, it may be for one of the following reasons:

Abnormal Condition

Probable Cause Corrective Action
Light weak or fails to go on when charging contact is depressed

Weak Battery

Dirty (Corroded) battery or light switch springs contacts

Loose light bulb

Burned out bulb

Replace Battery

Clean battery and light switch contacts to bright metal with steel wool or equivalent.

Tighten bulb in socket

 Replace bulb

Shadow appear on dosimeter scale

Dirt on charging contact

Dirt on either end of dosimeter

Clean charging contact

Clean dosimeter seal and eye-piece with clean dry lint free cloth

Fiber image unsteady (jittery movement of fiber image when rotating voltage control

Poor contact of dosimeter with outer aluminum sleeve of charging contact.

Keeping the dosimeter vertical, move dosimeter sideways to make the charging contact sleeve touch the inside wall of the dosimeter charging recess

Light illuminated scale, but fiber image does not appear on scale with rotation of voltage control.

Poor contact of dosimeter with outer aluminum sleeve of charging contact.

Dirt or moisture on charging end of dosimeter or charging contact

Faulty circuit component or connections

Same as above

Clean or dry faulty part.

Replace charger with new one

Warranty

There is a 1 year warranty, but shall not apply in any instances where there is evidence of damage by accident, misuse, or alteration.
